About Greenway Project

At its core, a greenway project is a strategic and thoughtful response to the challenges posed by urbanization and population growth. It leverages the potential of open spaces, often following natural corridors like riverbanks, abandoned rail lines, or waterfronts, to create a seamless network of interconnected trails, parks, and green oases. The goal is to provide safe, accessible, and sustainable spaces for people to walk, run, cycle, and engage with nature while mitigating the impacts of urban development on the natural environment.

Greenway projects offer a myriad of benefits to communities and the environment. From a recreational perspective, these green corridors offer a reprieve from the hustle and bustle of city life, providing opportunities for relaxation, exercise, and outdoor activities. Families can gather for picnics, children can play in well-designed playgrounds, and walkers can explore scenic routes, all within a green, car-free environment.

Historical Greenway Projects

The Detroit Greenlink

The Southwest Detroit Greenlink was constructed under a collaboration of the Southwest Detroit Business Association, MDOT, the City of Detroit, Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan, Tour de troit, and the former Greater Corktown Development Corporation. This 17.2 mile route is the longest in Detroit!

Parks and Historical Sites

The Southwest Detroit Greenlink passes three major City of Detroit parks – Patton, Clark, and Roosevelt. Each has its own recreational character and is surrounded by a community that cares about making it better. Check their links for activities and sports.

Cultural and Historical Sites

The Greenlink allows visitors access to the Latino and Middle Eastern communities and cultures that make this part of Wayne County unique. In addition, the Greenlink passes important historical sites related to auto and labor heritage as Southwest Detroit is “the neighborhood that built the car.” The Southwest Detroit Greenlink is also a designated route of Adventure Cycling Association’s Underground Railroad Bicycle Route.

Bike Racks

127 bike racks are available along the Southwest Detorit Greenlink, with thanks to projects funded by SEMTA, Kresge Foundation and MDOT/Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan.

The SW and circular decorative bike racks were designed by Tony Martinez of Disenos Ornamental Iron of Southwest Detroit, and the Corktown bikeracks were designed by Kristyn Koth of Parallel Studio in Corktown.

The Route

The Southwest Detroit Greenlink starts on the north side of Patton Park as a 1-mile off-road path, linking north into Dearborn’s Lapeer Park and its circular path. The bike lanes pick up on West Vernor at the Dearborn border and head east through the neighborhoods of Springwells Village, Vernor/Livernois, Vernor/Junction, Hubbard Farms, and Mexicantown. Moving north, the bike lanes take bikers to the Corktown and Core City neighborhoods linking to the Woodbridge neighborhood and Midtown’s cultural attractions and restaurants. Taking the bike lanes south from Mexicantown, a biker rides to Riverside Park on the Detroit River and the West Riverwalk!
