The SDBA Façade Improvement Program helps business and property owners improve their storefronts by providing grants for architectural services and reimbursement for up to 50% of construction costs. Façade improvements include updates such as new signage, lighting, and awnings, but can also completely rebuild storefronts.

The Façade Improvement Program uses the City of Detroit Design Standards and Guidelines for Traditional Main Street Overlay Areas to ensure the appropriate urban design is reinforced. A volunteer Design Committee of community members and professionals reviews each project. Ultimately, the Façade Improvement Program leverages significant private investment by both program participants and other property owners who follow their example.
