Celebrate Día de Los Muertos

IN SOUTHWEST DETROIT

A Mexican multi-day holiday celebrated throughout Mexico, Día de Los Muertos coincides with the Catholic observances of All Saints’ Eve (Oct. 31), All Saints’ Day (Nov. 1) and All Souls’ Day (Nov. 2). It is the time of year when individuals believe the boundaries between the living and the dead become permeable, allowing the souls of the departed to travel back to visit loved ones. Elaborate Ofrendas are created with pictures of loved ones, food, flowers, candles, religious symbols, and other traditional decorations such as sugar skulls, papel picado (pecked paper) and Pan de Muerto (bread of the dead). In addition, visits to local cemeteries to honor loved ones are common during the celebration.

Candles are often left in the form of a cross to represent the cardinal directions, so the spirits can find their way. It will have the common three levels, which represent heaven, earth, and the underworld. To prevent any hazardous situations the display will utilize battery-powered candles but will include a string of “plug-in” lights, and incense with the appropriate incense holder.

Dedicated to Laura M. DeLaRosa she is Laura Chavez-Wazeerud-Din’s
grandmother and she shares with us her story. My viejita was the best storyteller I
ever knew. Her stories had the power to heal inspire and impower me. She was my
first teacher, my first superhero, she was my everything. She taught me life lessons I
still use today. She taught me our family history and our cultural history (not found in
any textbooks). It is my duty to carry on her legacy. My hope is that my son will grow
up with a sense of self that I have instilled in him the essence of who we are outside
of the false identities we grab hold of as we navigate the world. Annually I create our
family ofrend Like my viejita I tell our story, De La Rosa.
