Viva Mexicantown: A New Chapter for Detroit’s Cultural Corridor

Mexicantown Main Street Rebranding: honors heritage while driving local growth.

The Mexicantown Main Street rebranding campaign is breathing new life into one of Detroit’s most iconic cultural corridors, celebrating its rich Mexican heritage and growing business community. This comprehensive campaign, led by the Southwest Detroit Business Association (SDBA) and the Mexicantown-Hubbard Communities Main Street program, brings together local businesses, residents, and stakeholders for a unified effort to strengthen and promote the district while proudly preserving its roots.

A key feature of the campaign is the unveiling of nearly 200 colorful, bilingual streetlight banners along the 1.7-mile corridor of W. Vernor Highway and Bagley Street. These banners do more than decorate; they carry messages like “Shop/Compra,” “Dine/Come,” and “Love/Ama,” inviting locals and visitors to experience everything Mexicantown has to offer. Additional banners spotlight beloved storefronts, multigenerational businesses, and signature Detroit landmarks, creating a visual identity
that highlights both tradition and progress.

Beyond its visuals, the rebrand delivers practical benefits. The new mexicantownmainstreet.com website offers resources for both residents and business owners, including a calendar of events and free business profiles, all designed to increase district visibility and drive local commerce. A monthly e-newsletter keeps the community informed and engaged with news, menu updates, and special features on Mexicantown’s people and businesses.

Designed by local artist Eddi Gonzales, the campaign’s visuals, featuring elements from Mexican folklore and iconic local imagery that reflect the neighborhood’s true character. This authenticity is intentional: every element was shaped through community collaboration, emphasizing that Mexicantown’s strength lies in its people. As José Maldonado, Main Street Director, notes, the campaign is about community pride, resilience, and a future full of promise.

At its core, Mexicantown Main Street’s rebranding is more than a facelift; it is an investment in community, identity, and small business vitality. By creating a unified look, strengthening digital access, and highlighting the area’s vibrant culture, the campaign ensures that Mexicantown continues to be a destination where tradition meets opportunity and every voice is part of the story.
